Dental Implants

What are Dental Implants?

Dental Implants can be used to replace a single tooth or multiple missing teeth. The dental implant acts a substitute for a natural tooth root, once placed and healed they can be used to support crowns, bridges and dentures. When crowns and bridges are fitted on Implants, they act as if they were normal teeth. Dentures supported by Implants are secure in the mouth and do not move.

How will I benefit from Dental Implants?

With over a 90% success rate, dental implants have many lifestyle benefits. Providing a permanent solution for missing teeth meaning you will have improved comfort, security and confidence. Acting as a natural tooth, biting and chewing is restored, there is no need to worry about what you can and cannot eat and your taste is not affected. Dental implants allow you to speak naturally and not worry about moving, slipping or chattering dentures. Dentures can cause embarrassment, discomfort and pain when worn. Dentures rely on many factors in your mouth for support and stability, this includes your gums and natural teeth. Dentures work best when it is ‘anchored’ in position. Where natural teeth are missing, Dental implants can provide this and allow you to feel like yourself again. This method can be used for partial and full dentures.

Dental implants can be part of a Smile Makeover alongside other dental treatments such as restorative dentistry including composite fillings, crowns and bridges, cosmetic dentistry including teeth straightening, teeth whitening and composite bonding. All treatments can be carried out all at Select Dental.

Am I suitable for Dental Implants?

Dental Implants are successful in many patients of all ages. Prior to any dental implant treatment, a full examination, intra and extra oral is required with full mouth radiographs. The need for full mouth radiographs is very important and this is carried out to check the health of the roots of existing teeth, the surrounding bone levels and structure, to check for any oral pathology such as cysts, infections, periodontal (gum) disease and anatomy such as unerupted teeth or retained tooth roots. Select Dental Centre has the facilities at the practice to take full panoral radiographs and CBCT scans. We also take a full medical history at your first appointment.

Having a healthy mouth is very important and Dental Implants survive best in a healthy environment. If any tooth decay or gum problems are found at your full examination appointment, this will need to be treated prior to any Implant treatment. Your dentist will guide you through any dental treatment needed, giving you a full comprehensive plan after your initial appointment.

How are Dental Implants placed?

Performed under a local anaesthetic in a sterile surgical environment, Dental Implants are surgically placed into the jawbone, via an opening in the gum tissue. The bone is prepared, the implant placed, and the soft tissues stitched back together.

The recovery of Dental Implant surgery is likened to the recovery from an extraction. After 7-14 days, the stitches are removed, and the implant left to heal for 3-6 months. If additional preparation is needed, such as bone grafting, the healing process can take up to 12-18 months depending on the size of the grafting required.

The time the surgery takes can be as little as 30 minutes or can take serval hours if more complex. After the procedure, you may experience some minor swelling and occasionally some bruising which can be alleviated with simple painkillers. We offer detailed aftercare advice to ensure a trouble-free recovery.

After the healing process, a crown, bridge, or denture can be attached to the implant to appear as a natural tooth.

What do Dental Implants cost?

The cost of dental implants is dependent on each individual case. After the full assessment, all costs will be explained to you in detail, within your bespoke treatment plan.

Select Dental can offer several financial options for you to make your investment manageable.
