Getting used to wearing your new dentures can take time. We take a lot of care and time creating and fitting new dentures for our patients.  Even so they can still feel very strange and awkward for the first few weeks.

What can you expect with new dentures?

These are the common issues encountered by new denture wearers and our tips on how to help yourself get used to new dentures:

Increased saliva – you may find that you have more saliva in your mouth and need to swallow more. As you mouth gets used to your dentures this should diminish.

Difficulty eating – eating may be difficult at first. Stick to soft foods such as chicken, fish and mashed potatoes in the first few days. Cut food up into small pieces and chew slowly using both sides of your mouth at the same time. You should be able to return to your normal diet but just be patient in the early days of your new dentures.

Soreness – initially you might experience sore spots in your mouth from the dentures. Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water might help. After a couple of weeks any sore spots should have lessened. If soreness continues we recommend you go back to your dental technician to check everything is OK.

Speech problems – you may find that you lisp a bit at first or have difficulty pronouncing certain words. Practice reading out loud words that you find difficult. Over time you will learn to annunciate better and find speech is no longer a problem.

Self-consciousness – it’s very common in the beginning to feel like it’s obvious to everyone that you are wearing dentures! If you’ve got good quality dentures than most people will have no idea. If you need convincing keep checking in the mirror. We’re sure you’ll be pleased with how natural they look!

How long does it take to get used to new dentures?

We normally tell our new denture wearers to expect things to take around a month to settle down. However, there may be a longer denture adjustment and healing time if you have recently had teeth extracted or have full-plate dentures.

If at any time during the first few months you are unhappy with your new dentures please visit your dental technician.
